Let’s start on a light note: What animal would you like to be? Or what animal did you wish you could be when you were a child?
Noah in the New Testament
One way to learn the fuller meaning of passages in the Old Testament is to see how they are revisited or used in the New Testament. Noah and the Flood are mentioned four times in the New Testament with powerful, contemporary lessons and applications. We will study three of those instances here.
#1 – Matthew 24:36-42 (parallel in Luke 17:22-27)
READ the verses.
#2 – Hebrews 11:6-7
The primary topic of this chapter is celebrating how true, saving faith grips and redirects the lives of God’s redeemed people.
#3 – 2 Peter 2:1-10
Close in prayer asking for eager faith and opportunities to be a herald for Jesus Christ.
The sermon was fairly heavy dealing exclusively with the sinfulness of sin. What forms of wickedness in the world or in yourself are most likely to leave you with a sense of that heaviness?
Did the Holy Spirit reveal anything new or hit you with anything in particular regarding sin during the sermon?
The Wear and Tear of Sin
The Savior’s Victory Over Sin
Write a brief message to your sin nature based on what you’ve studied.
Write a brief message to your Savior, Jesus, based on what you’ve studied.
In the sermon Pastor Thomas referred to J.D. Greear’s illustration of the church as a cruise liner or an aircraft carrier. What are some other word pictures you have heard accurately describing the church in either a positive or negative way? (If you can’t think of any on your own then think of one from the Bible.)
How did Sunday’s sermon “You Are Sent” hit you personally? Did God stir or move you in any way?
Seeing “Sent” in the Scriptures
READ Psalm 67:1-4
READ Isaiah 49:5-6. This is a Messianic prophecy about Jesus’ life mission.
READ Acts 1:6-11
Embracing a “Sent” Mindset
Who is a “regular Christian” you know (not a full time pastor or missionary) that you think lives with a mentality of being “sent” in their everyday life?
What do you think it would look like to immediately increase your “sent” mindset and lifestyle?
What hurdles or excuses most often trip you up from living with a “sent” mindset and lifestyle?
What type of equipping would enhance your ability to be a witness and make disciples that eagerly worship Jesus? Where can you locate that equipping?
Close by reading John 20:21 and praying honestly about your role in God's mission of redemption.
